Original, matted and framed, The Empress artwork from my Krystalline Kweens I tarot series, originally debuted at the Chocolate and Art Show in 2018.
This 8″x10″ pen and ink portrait represents femininity, beauty, nature, nurturing, and abundance. Modeled after Virgo, this Empress is a beautiful, maternal figure happily resting in her comfortably cushioned chair by the fire. Twelve visible stars surround her emerald crown, connecting her to the mystical realm and the cycles of the natural world (12 months, 12 planets). A cushion with the mark of Venus, planet of love, creativity, fertility, and beauty, lies beside her and her gown is decorated with pomegranates, another symbol of fertility. Connected to Mother Earth, the elements surround her and natural life is in abundance, bringing her a sense of peace and tranquility.
I chose my mom, Betty Soper, to represent this card for pretty obvious reasons, this being the maternal card in the deck. A Virgo and recent retiree, she spent her career applying her nurturing, mothering nature to help educate and care for young children as a public school teacher. She is at her happiest when she is out at the ranch where she can disconnect from the world and reconnect with nature. The ranch over which she reigns is an eastern bluebird preserve, where she ushers in their next generations with love, food, and shelter. Here she is surrounded by life’s pleasures, living a comfortable lifestyle, where everything she and my father dreamed of has come to fruition.
