I was ecstatic when Carl, partner to my near and dear college friend Clay, contacted me to capture this surprise 8-bit family portrait to celebrate their 8-year anniversary.
I worked closely with Carl to ensure that he was happy with the final design. We went through 2.5 rounds of sketch concepts to create the pixel versions of each, removing accessories and changing smiles and beard patterns. Once the final character designs were selected, I laid out the final design with a ruler and pen on tracing paper, got approval, and then transferred to the final page via light box.
The final version of this 8″x10″ 8-bit anniversary portrait was drawn using a mix of Copic markers, Cra-Z-Art Timeless Creations ultra fineline markers, and Gelly Roll pens on Strathmore smooth bristol paper. From start-to-finish, the planning and execution of the piece took 13 hours.
