VENDING THIS SATURDAY! “Too Poor for Canopy” is a show built by artists, for artists. The COVID-19 crisis negatively impacted our art community, our culture, and the creative economy. For those of us in the art community, the loss of human connection through the arts hits particularly hard.
.
In the last eight months, countless artists in our community have both lost work and the opportunity to show their art to the world through traditional means. The Austin Studio Tour is the largest opportunity in our community, and yet there is still an incredible barrier to entry for emerging artists, who are continuing to struggle due to the loss of their studio spaces and income from COVID-19.
.
906 Chote will be set up as an open-air art gallery in which our community outdoor exhibition can be viewed by anyone. Our mission is to bring awareness of emerging art to the general public while bringing people and art closer together.

Do you like wholesome content? You may not know it, but my grandmother (Nanny) is a phenomenal crafter. When quarantine struck, like many local artists, her craft markets were all cancelled. Not wanting to fill up her home with inventory, but still wanting to stretch her creative muscles, she reached out to me for a little collab. I sent her some Alien Cutie wooden discs and she created these beautifully unique pine needle baskets. These are the first of several waves of SamSoper.Art x Nanny’s Creations collabs to come!

SWIPE for the second picture of the baskets I’ll have available at my table for the Too Poor for Canopy show on Saturday. Each basket is hand-woven from the 18-22” needles of the long-leaf pine tree, collected in Florida, decorated with upcycled beading, and coated in Minwax for protection. She would be so excited to learn that the Austin-community snatched up all her baskets so come out and get em.

The first picture shows the Rococo-style alien cutie cherubs basket that was our first this year and a wine bottle witch we collaborated on last year! Both of these are very much mine and NFS. I will cherish them forever.
